News – GPC: Model that generates movement like ChatGPT generates text

A new development in the field of artificial intelligence could fundamentally change the way robots and virtual characters are trained. Researchers have introduced Generative Pretrained Controllers (GPC), a model that learns movement using the same principle that underlies large language models like ChatGPT. The SIGGRAPH 2026 conference presents a completely new approach to motor control: instead of training robots separately to walk, run, jump, or climb stairs, a single model learns all these skills simultaneously from a gigantic collection of movements. The process begins with millions of examples of human and animal movements. This data is not stored as traditional animations, but is converted into a "language of movement", where each segment is represented by a token, just like words in a language model.
